Mason P. Ashe is a “Wharton Excellence in Teaching” award-winning Lecturer of sports law in the Legal Studies and Business Ethics Department in the undergraduate program at the Wharton School since 2015. He has previously designed curricula and taught sports law as an Adjunct Professor at the DeVos Sport Business Management MBA Program at the University of Central Florida, and at law schools such as Howard, Georgetown, and Florida A&M.
Professor Ashe is an experienced sports and entertainment attorney, brand strategist, board member, angel investor, and award-winning sports law adjunct professor. He is Founder and CEO of Ashe Sports & Entertainment Consulting (“ASEC”) based in Washington, DC. At ASEC, Ashe offers a blend of deal-making, strategic planning, problem solving, contract negotiating, branding, marketing, and business management services to assist talented individuals, influencers, employers, and investors within the sports and entertainment industries. For more than 30 years in the sports and entertainment industries, Ashe’s clients have included: companies, investors, nonprofits, colleges, sports leagues, agencies, pro and amateur athletes, coaches, physicians, trainers, entertainers, promoters, media anchors, networks, content creators, and wealth advisors.
Professor Ashe recently served as Of Counsel at Am Law 100 law firm Blank Rome in DC. He received the Sports Lawyer of the Year Award from the National Bar Association (July 2015); listed on “101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports” by SPORTS ILLUSTRATED (2003 and 2004); and is a former board member of the Black Entertainment & Sports Lawyers Association (“BESLA”). He is also a member of the Board of Advisors for sports analytics startup Cerebro Sports; Chairman of the Washington Jazz Arts Institute (“WJAI.org”); and a Trustee for Hamilton College.
Professor Ashe earned a BA degree in Psychology from Hamilton College; a JD degree from the University at Buffalo School of Law; and received a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree from Hamilton College.
This course examines the legal, financial, moral, and policy issues and disputes that arise in the world of amateur and professional sports. The casebook assignments cover some of the most current and comprehensive legal developments affecting high school, college, Olympic, and professional sports. We will discuss new landmark judicial decisions, as well as, significant NCAA infractions cases and Olympic sports arbitration awards. Students are also provided an opportunity to debate complex issues related to the application of antitrust, labor, and intellectual property law to sports. We will approach the issues from the perspective of various stakeholders in the sports industry, such as the sports lawyer, corporate sponsor, university administrator, team owner, team manager, coach, athlete, sports regulatory body, and fan.
