Matti Suominen is a Professor of Finance at the Aalto University School of Business in Helsinki, Finland, where he has acted also as the Associate Dean of Research. From 1997 until 2006 Matti was in the full-time faculty at INSEAD, first as an Assistant Professor and later as an Associate Professor of Finance. Between 2007-2019, Matti was a regular part-time visiting professor at INSEAD. Matti’s PhD is from the University of Pennsylvania.
Matti’s areas of research are information economics in financial markets, hedge fund investment strategies, asset management, and corporate finance. He has published articles in leading academic journals such as the Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Review of Asset Pricing Studies, International Economic Review, and the Journal of Financial Markets. His articles have received two Best Paper Awards.
Matti has previously worked as an Engagement Manager at the McKinsey & Co. He has more than 10 years of experience from participating in two different European hedge funds. Matti is the Deputy Chair of the Investment Supervising Committee of the Finland’s State Pension Fund and sits in numerous investment committees for large family offices and institutions. He has acted as an expert witness in litigations related to antitrust and M&A valuation. Matti has been an advisor both to the public sector, e.g., for the Finland’s Ministry of Finance, as well as to large corporations, startups, and pension funds in US and Europe.
Matti has taught extensively in various MBA and executive programs, receiving several best teacher awards. He was previously the Program Director of the INSEAD “Finance for Executives” program, and has taught in or directed more than 25 company specific executive programs including those for Bertelsmann, CISCO, Korea Electric Power Corporation, Noble, Nordea, Mubadala, Schlumberger and Shell.
